Tell us a little bit about you:

I am 39 years old and currently live in Lincolnshire (very flat but a lot of nice woodland walks). I enjoy playing the guitar (very badly) and trying to persuade myself that exercise really is good for me. The vast majority of my spare time is taken up writing or, at the very least, thinking about what I’m going to write; it’s an obsession I feel peculiarly proud of. And although I only discovered how much fun writing can be a few years ago, it seems to be a dominant force in my life.

What do you like most about your craft?

Although this is perhaps a slightly self-indulgent answer: I like the fact that, when your writing is flowing, your imagination seems to almost come to life.

    What inspires/influences you?

Hard to pin down specifics, but I am attracted to unusual circumstances: turning something conventional into the unconventional really floats my submarine.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just finished a fantasy novel and I’m in the process of trying to get it published.

We at Good Guy Publishing are mad on books, what are you reading at the moment?

I feel that reading different subject matter helps my writing, and as a consequence I tend to end up reading more than one book at a time (I can read whichever one I’m in the mood for): Exit Music by Ian Rankin, Ulysses by James Joyce and The Purple Plain by H. E. Bates.

Which three books would you list as your favourite all-time reads?

I find it hard to pick a favourite anything: there are so many brilliant writers out there. But if I’m pushed I would say:

    The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

The Darkness That Comes Before by R. Scott Barker

The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow

What are your hopes for the future?

To see it with as much health and happiness as possible, oh, and maybe after that to get my book published.

Do you have any advice for anyone wishing to follow in your foot-steps?

Wear comfortable shoes, and try not to trip over your own feet.
